The closing date for the MEMOIRS Photography Competition and Exhibition is extended to 21st of February ... For more information,

Note: It is a free competition with attractive prizes..... Be sure to read the rules through and through before summiting your entries.... if you have any questions... i can help you clarify !!

Sunday, February 7, 2010

So sorry for the lack of event.....

I've been busy and somewhat lazy for the past 2 months. And because of that the club hasn't have any activity recently. But the planning process has already been done and there WILL BE upcoming events from end of February all the way to June.

Remember, the club's purpose is to provide opportunity for practice and to gather photographers.

1. MEDT110 (incoming batch) will be having their orientation at the end of February up to the first week of March.... I'm opening the chance to practice and to work together in covering this massive event... for those who might have friends coming in and would like to take pictures of them during orientation or those who would simply like to take candid pictures .....

Pls email me at imu-photographyclub@hotmail.com. I'll fill you in with the details and we can discuss on what we would like to do then.

2. Hope for Haitian Week, is coming up on the 1st of March till the 4th or 5th of March. I was asked to look for photographers who like to cover the event as well. There will be an exhibition by our club, performance and food sales by other clubs. This is also an opportunity for those who would like to practice their candid shots also to meet more ppl in IMU. If interested in helping out (please we do need some help).....

Pls email me at imu-photographyclub@hotmail.com. I'll fill you in with the details and we can discuss on what we would like to do then.

3. There is an exhibition going on at KLPAC since the 2nd of Feb until the 21st of Feb. I was told that it was free so it might be worth checking out if you're going with a few friends. From what I've read, it's basically an exhibition of 5 professional photographers. There is so much you can learn about lighting and posing just by looking at other's work. However, I do not know what time does it start and end in a day. Hence, I recommend going in the afternoon and getting back before rush hour. I probably would not be able to bring you guys there personally (though i really want to) but at least you can try to get there yourselves.

4. DCIM showcase would be on the 14th to the 16th of May (Friday until Sunday) in Midvalley.
I'll add on more details as the date approaches (because these kind of things have a tendency to change venue). DCIM stands for Digital Camera, Image and Media. It's very much like a PC fair but focused on cameras, printers, films, and all forms of accessories. They also have showcases from major photography companies (like Nikon, Canon, Sony and Olympus) and these showcases allow comers to try out their arsenal of lenses 'on the spot'. Meaning, you can bring your camera to check out compatibility and to test the lenses specs FOR FREE. IT IS A MASSIVE EVENT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS EVERY YEAR. Though personally I haven't been to one (I missed last year's), but this is one event that I'm definitely going. For those who have even the slightest interest in going....

Pls email me at imu-photographyclub@hotmail.com. I'll fill you in with the details and we can discuss on what we would like to do then.

Believe me when I say... there is more events coming up..... Stay tuned and i promise the photography club is not a dead club ...... ^_____________^

Happy Valentines and Happy Chinese New Year !!!!

Note: EXIF data is the integrated data of an image (usually consists of how the picture was taken in terms of focal length, aperture, ISO, camera model, date, time ETC ETC)

Most programs do not interfere with this data but to be on the safe side, please use photoshop for any photoeditting.

DO NOT TRY TO PLAGIARIZE IMAGES FROM OTHER SOURCES (mainly internet). The EXIF data would provide information whether is the image authentic or not.

Coverage of events of IMU

We are expanding the Photography Club in IMU by attempting to cover every event by other clubs while providing training and teaching about photography at the same time.

In another words,

We are providing free training for those who wishes to learn the basic and gain understanding for photography and it's techniques.

The training would consist of coverage of an event (IMU) while partnering with another student who is experienced in using DSLR.

For those who DOES NOT own a DSLR and still wishes to learn, we, the Photography Club can lend you one, free of charge.

Most importantly, we're giving the chance to use and to learn photography to anyone who is interested.

Contact us at

imu-photographyclub@hotmail.com

for any inquiries or requests.

Focusing basics: using depth of field

What is depth of field?
You'll notice in some photos that objects up close are in focus, but everything in the distance is blurry. This is a classic technique known as adjusting depth of field. It's the perfect trick for beautiful portraits and close-ups of all kinds.

How does depth of field work?
The areas in blue show what will be in focus based on different aperture settings.
The size of the opening in your camera's lens, known as the aperture, determines what stays in focus and what is out of focus in your photos. The space between the nearest and farthest point of focus is called the depth of field. In other words, your depth of field is the portion of your photo that is sharp and in focus.

What are f-numbers?
Aperture is measured in terms of f-numbers (the "f" stands for focal ratio). The aperture grows wider as the f-number gets lower.
These different aperture sizes are called f-numbers. Aperture size actually grows in diameter the lower the f-number. For example, f2.8 is a very big opening, whereas f16 is a very small opening.

How does aperture affect depth of field?
A small aperture (high f-number) leaves everything in focus.
The smaller the aperture, the greater your depth of field will be. In other words, objects near and far will be in focus. The opposite is also true. The bigger the aperture size, the more restricted your depth of field becomes. Only objects close to you will be in focus.
A wide aperture only focuses on close objects.

When to use landscape mode
In landscape mode, objects near and far are in focus.
Almost all digital cameras are built with two standard default depth of field settings—landscape and portrait. In landscape mode, the goal is to keep far away objects in focus, such as mountains or cityscapes. The aperture for landscape is set to a very small opening to bring as much of the scene into focus as possible.

When to use portrait mode
In portrait mode, only objects close to the camera will be in focus.
In portrait mode, the goal is to keep closer objects within several feet in focus, while leaving background details out of focus. In this case, the aperture is automatically opened larger. If your subject is less than 20 inches or so away, use your camera's macro shooting mode. This mode allows you to focus even when you're extremely close to your subject. Check your user's manual to make sure your camera has this feature.
